about

Instrumental Latin jazz featuring Omar Puente on violin

When we reached my friend’s suburb of Havana I was wired. Exhausted from 27 hours’ travel and buzzed to have arrived in this musical mecca. I was shown a room, a chair and sold a beer. Out came my pencil & notepad and I wrote the first thing that came to mind.

Next day we flew on to Santiago De Cuba. I took out my horn up to the roof deck. My beautiful old Conn alto sounded sweeter than ever in that warm sticky humidity, and that little tune was working a treat. It sounded the way I felt, and always makes me happy.

Some local bata drummers made a presentation then chatted to us after. They explained that some musicians play with technical excellence and that was good. That some musicians play from their heart, and that was good. But the best is to play with both. A musician can search to find that elusive apex of qualities, to play from the heart and with mastery. This is to play with manana.
