Trippy psychedelic soul, and bebop
Featuring Carleen Anderson and two rhythm sections.
My first trip to USA was to visit a friend of met in Manchester. He was living in Santa Cruz. I had a few days with him followed by a week in San Francisco.
I stayed in a pretty awful motel in a pretty gritty end of town. I had my alto, ate sandwiches and found jams to play at. The hiphop scene with alive and real. A group called Felonius was really shaking things up with their socially conscious lyrics and live band. I attended their ground breaking rap opera - the first of its kind. Then while walking home afterwards a melody sprung into my mind.
I was crossing a building site at dusk and this melody appeared. Then another. And another. And a bass line, and chords. I marched all the way back to my shared room, grabbed my pencil and manuscript from my bunk and started charting. Several hours later I’d gotten most of it down. I was parched (thirsty) and suddenly realised that my fellow room sharers had arrived, bedded down and were now asleep. Quite a surreal realisation.
I’ve since returned to San Francisco many times, and filmed footage for the video.
Carleen Anderson & I met when she sung as a guest with Norman Connors and Michael Henderson in London. It was a Starship Orchestra show following some of their classic original recordings. Michael had hired me to realise the vision: transcribe the original fifty piece orchestra, reduce the arrangements to a thirteen piece band, book the band, lead rehearsals, MD the show, run the horn section, and play the show.
I ended up playing alto sax, tenor sax, soprano sax, flute, and glockenspiel & conducting. I also co-produced the show. We had a sold out house of 5000 and a four star review in the Financial Times.
Everyone involved was completely buzzing to be working together and the music was the star of the show. Right there and then Carleen & I agreed to share a project of some kind in the future.
When I suggested working on Frisco, Carleen told me she'd had a very enjoyable time living there and so we set to work adding vocals to the recorded backing track and including jazz horns.
My original melody is now the “cameo” of the jazz interludes. I love how it switches from 65bpm to 260bpm. Not double time but Quadruple time.
lyrics
Shine! San Francisco! Frisco again and again
Frisco again and again (repeat)
Crossing waters in time
With the undercurrents pushing me about
To find life out
Pulling tidals to the coast
Learning what and whom might mean the most
To live and love
Cloudy dawns and clear sunsets
Starts and ends with sums of gives and gets
Who knows what happens next?
The world is known for many gems
Shine! San Francisco! Again!
Shine! San Francisco! Frisco again and again
Frisco again and again (repeat)

Great album! A crossover jazz-r'nb-african trip from continent to continent. London does it again. Nyubian Twist with more jazz overtones. John Woodward
Heard “ Tubby’s Chaser “ on our local Jazz station. Sourced the album on Spotify - listened - it was love at first listen. Hoped I could get vinyl on Bandcamp - was successful!! purple2001
